Lesson Plan #2

Small Change Snacks!

This is a first grade math lesson plan. I would start by teaching the students about the four different coins: the quarter, the nickel, the dime, and the penny. Students will learn about each coins' value. The quarter being twenty-five cents, the nickel five cents, the dime ten cents, and the penny one cent. I will pass out one of each to the students, so they may compare sizes and color. After going over the value of coins, students will be given a worksheet to complete.

On the worksheet, students have snacks and a value on them. On the bottom of the worksheet, it shows 9 different coin combinations. Students will count the total amount for each number. Then write the correct letter of the snack that you can buy in the square next to the coins. This worksheet allows students to see how important it is in the real-life (despite the price, since everything on the worksheet is one dollar). On the bottom of the worksheet, there is an activity that can be done at home.

Throughout the week, I would award students coins based on their behavior, grades, caring actions, etc. At the end of the week, I will have a little "store" open where students will be able to "purchase" a gift. The gifts will vary from pencils, erasers, notebook, etc. As a teacher, I want students to experience real-life situations and be able to go in the real world and understand. Besides that, I also want to teach them about saving. Eventually, I would want something "big" in the "store" for those students that learn to save.
